Don’t worry if you think you’ve got a really small (or really big!) head – the Sennheiser HD-280 Professional ear cups actually extend laterally and pivot in and out to accommodate almost any head shape and size. It is the innovative Y-brackets that allow this dynamic sizing as well as easy and convenient transport and storage – these headphones are collapsible.
There is an attached coiled cable (about 3 meters/9.8 feet) that ends with a 1/8-inch gold-plated connector with a 1/4-inch screw-on adapter. The Good
Weighing in at just over 10 ounces, the Sennheiser HD-280 Professional headphones are not lightweights by any means. These heavy-duty headphones are actually a little bit of a work horse. Durable and reliable, they are up to any professional’s standards. In fact, the Sennheiser HD-280 Professional headphones can actually take a beating – dropping them on a studio floor won’t hurt them (though we wouldn’t advise beating up your nice, new headphones!)
The Bad
Basically, the only downside to the Sennheiser HD-280 Professional headphones is that they are on the bulky side, which is also a pro for making them long-lasting. However, after prolonged use, there is no sense that the headphones are an extension of the head, but an apparatus. It can be distracting for some people.

After searching for a pair of ‘over-the-ear’ wireless headphones with decent sound quality (for under $125), I ended up coming back to a corded pair of headphones. After purchasing and returning quite a few other brands, I settled on the Sennheiser HD-280 Professional Headphones.
There were enough reviews on Amazon for me to feel comfortable with the purchase and the price was almost $50 less than what I found at Fry’s Electronics for the exact same pair. One of the main selling points for me was the easily replaceable parts (cord & earpads) as I plan on keeping them for quite awhile. Another plus for me was the heavier coiled cord. A few of the headphones that I purchased (and returned) had very flimsy cords that looked like they were asking to be ripped out or crimped at the first opportunity.
Now that I have been listening to them for about 3 weeks, I would absolutely recommend them to anyone. First, the earpad completely encloses my ears, as it should. But you would be surprised to find out just how many supposedly ‘over-the-ear’ headphones actually rest on some part of your ear because they are too small. They are lightweight, or at least as lightweight as a pair like this can be, and they are comfortable. Yes, they were a little tight at first, but if you read the instructions, that is the way they are designed. The pressure is there to keep the headphones pressed against your ear to eliminate as much external noise as possible; which it does.
Conclusion
Overall, the Sennheiser HD-280 Professional headphones are a breakthrough in the headphone market and a really great buy. The suggested manufacturer listing price is at about $199, but they are easily picked up for about half that – usually around $99 if you’re a smart shopper. With excellent acoustic isolation and a rugged, durable design, these headphones really will be one of the best buys you make for your studio.
